As a new medium, there’s a lot of experimentation surrounding MPNs, and rightly so. However, there are still a lot of lessons to be learned from more established media. After all, they were young once too.
With that in mind, check out this excellent article on character introduction in film. I’ll wait.
A lot of the examples aren’t directly applicable. Unless you’re actually shooting video, you can’t use Hitchcock’s Lifeboat as a guide. The concepts are still valid, though, even if you’re just using static webpages.

The Cypher’s third adventure, Descry.us has come to a successful close. Thank you for being a part of it!
Whether or not you participated in the MPN, please take a minute to fill out the Descry.us survey. Submit a survey with your email address and you’ll be entered for a free subscription to the next MPN.
We appreciate your feedback and will use it to tweak the next MPN, which will start February 1st, with pre-game beginning in mid-January.
Talk to you then!

We apologize for the problems with server connections lately, and we are working to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, it’s a very difficult problem to diagnose, because it seems to come and go.
We’re trying something new, and hopefully it should work. If it doesn’t, though, we’d appreciate it if you would let us know if you have any more problems connecting to the servers. Just send the Webmaster an email (@studiocypher.com), saying which server you were trying to access and when.
We’d like to get this ironed out as quickly as possible, because MPNs don’t work if you can’t access the websites!

Registration has opened for Studio Cypher’s newest MPN: Descry.us!
Professor Erikson has opened a connection to a dimension of symbols. Are you ready for what you’ll find there?
Congratulations to ndemeter for winning a free subscription from the survey drawing!
Also, we have new forums! Check them out!
Finally, if you tried to access the site yesterday, we had some technical problems, which should now have cleared up. If you encounter any more problems, email webmaster (at) studiocypher.com

What is that, you might ask? Well, during the ARGNet Netcast #1, we were mentioned as being one of the few creators of serialized games, along with Mind Candy.
If you enjoy MPNs and ARGs, and since you’re reading this blog, I can only assume you do, then I reccomend their netcast (which is the same as a podcast). It was a nice overview of a number of different games going on right now, as well as discussions on several other topics, like the lack of creativity in advertising.

As is so often the case in the entertainment industry, we have to push back the release date of Episode 3. It’s for the best, I promise.

Ever since The Beast started it all, the TINAG philosophy has been a guiding principle for the fledgling ARG community. The seminal book on ARGs is even titled “This Is Not a Game.” Since it’s such an recurrent refrain, we accept it as an overriding principle without much critical thought, to our detriment. Realizing that TINAG doesn’t always work is the first step toward using it effectively.

Now that enough time has passed for us to gain some perspective on the game (and ruminate on your comments in our survey), we’ve looked over Perfect Friends Forever and decided what worked, what didn’t, and what we’ll do differently next time. Overall, we’re quite happy with this episode. It went much more smoothly than OITC and hit most of the goals we set for it.
Without further ado, here are our thoughts on the second Cyphers adventure!

Greetings, Agents and Wakeful Agents. This is Ian and not, as you may expect, Will. I’m the sound engineer and lead puzzle designer. If you had issues with any of the ghost’s puzzles in Perfect Friends Forever, you can blame me. But we’ll get to that later. It’s been a busy time at Studio Cypher, with a lot of changes on the horizon.
First and foremost is the undergoing redesign of the site (of which this blog is the first major change!), which will hopefully tighten up the navigation and make it easier to find what you’re looking for. If you have any comments or suggestions for us, leave a comment. We always love to hear from you.
As a sneak peek at the redesign, our new logo is beneath the fold.

Studio Cypher has a new (more featureful) blog along with a fancy new blog URL: blog.studiocypher.com. The new article feed is http://blog.studiocypher.com/xml/rss20/feed.xml so make sure to update that as well.
This will make it easier for us to update the blog, which means more content for you!
All of the old blog’s entries have been migrated over but unfortunately, the comments weren’t so lucky.
